Just about Science

Do Protein Bars Really Work Science Fair Topic

A quick trip down the sports nutrition aisle at your local grocery store quickly brings to light how many products are sold to improve sports performance and health. Each product has been specially designed to do something for your body. Some products are designed to replenish your electrolytes after a heavy workout while others are designed to help rebuild your muscles after a strenuous workout. However, have you ever wondered if the claims made by these products are accurate? This is something that you can test with your science fair project.

Protein Bars

Protein bars are marketed to two specific demographics, people who want to lose weight and people who want to build muscles. The protein bars that are marketed to people trying to lose weight claim that they are able to curb your appetite and to provide your body with lean protein to help encourage weight loss. The protein bars that are marketed to people who are trying to build muscle claim that they provide a quality protein source that will enable the person to build more muscle.

Science Fair Topics

There are a couple of angles that you can take when developing this topic into a science fair project. The first angle is to focus on the weight loss claims and the second option is to focus on the muscle building properties of the bars. If you select the weight loss claims to test then you will need to select people to test that are trying to lose weight and if you select the muscle building claims then you will need to experiment with people who already are training to build muscle.

Testing Weight Loss Claims

The first direction that you can take in a protein bar science fair project is to see how effective it is at aiding in weight loss. To start with you will need to recruit two groups of dieters. The first group will be your control group. They will follow a healthy diet plan, like the Zone, but they will not supplement that diet with protein bars. The second group will be the test group. They will follow the same diet plan as the control group, however, they will add protein bars to their diet as a snack once a day.

To start the experiment both groups will be weighed and measured. They will then be given diet and exercise instructions. They will be given a diet journal to keep each day. This journal will include what they ate, how much they exercised and how they felt. At the end of weeks 1, 2, 3 and 4 the groups will be weighed and measured. After the 4th weigh in the data will be analyzed to determine if protein bars are aiding in the weight loss of the test group.

How Modern Science Emerged

If everything that is happening today can be based on one single word, then it must definitely be Science. Science today comprises of various fields such as Biology, pertaining to the study of plants and animals. Chemistry, which involves the study of various chemicals and substances present around the globe. Physics is the study of all the physical laws and their meanings. Mathematics, a particularly unique branch of science is where various equations and number systems are considered. The modern form of Science is the technology. Basically, Science means knowledge or to know, derived from Latin word ‘scientia’.

The origin of science, rather the origin of mankind’s conscience towards science can be dated as far back to the time before Christ. Great philosophers like Theophrastus, Aristotle etc made their discoveries during that time. Most of the modern day science can be derived from the apostles as set by the Greeks during the before Christ era. In fact, Greece was considered as the ‘temple of knowledge’ during that time. However, slowly and initially the word of science started spreading as more people became aware of their surroundings. Several wise people from India too contributed to science such as Aryabhatta etc. Numeral ‘zero’, a great invention or discovery also came from the land of India. However, during those ancient times, science could not spread widely since mode of communication was not as strong.

It was only after sixteenth century that scientific revolution started taking place. Most of the modern day discoveries were made during this period. Some of the geniuses like Sir Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Thomas Alva Edison, and Charles Darwin etc were born during this period. It was only during this period that Law of gravity, Theory of relativity, Invention of electric bulb and Theory of Evolution came into existence. These were the first milestones towards the modern day science and technology. Without forefathers like those mentioned above, the present day’s science would have been completely impossible.

Einstein is considered one of the greatest scientists of all time and he was the man of the 20th century with the publications of several of his papers on the theory of relativity, wave-particle duality and several other physics breakthroughs which were accepted only a little later because of the apprehensions of all the scientists of that time to digest several new concepts. Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics.

One of the greatest ever scientific discoveries which form the basis of the world we live in today came from the man called Thomas Alva Edison. It was the invention of the Electric Bulb. Edison worked hard on this invention that, he tried hundreds and hundreds of filaments before he came up with the tungsten filament. This bulb is still in use today even after more than hundreds of years in its original form without much change. As the filament has to be stable even under constant temperature of the Celsius of thousands of degrees, the problem of finding the right filament was a particularly tedious job. Science still continues to be the most fascinating field of mankind and keeps opening doors for the human civilization to grow and prosper. After all, the thirst to know is what separates us from other animals!

Science Presentations Great Ideas for Your Childs Birthday

If youre looking for a unique, fun birthday party idea, think about including science presentations. Kids will love seeing and participating in experiments that make objects do fun things or liquids start to foam. Best of all, the kids at the party will be learning something even if they dont realize that they are because of all the fun they are having.

A science theme can be a great choice if your child is interested in science or a particular branch of the field. Curious kids will also love seeing all the cool experiments that you can do with household items. If your child loves science class or cant get enough of sci-fi programs on TV, you may want to consider this party idea. Youll have more luck with slightly older children than younger children who wont be able to pay attention for longer periods of time.

If you want, you can have lab coats, clipboards, and funky glasses for each child to wear while they conduct or watch the experiments. Have test tubes for the kids to drink out of and make fun food that has a science theme. Try “brain” spaghetti or “dirt” cake with gummy worms as some examples. You can also create fun science related games like have a scavenger hunt for dinosaur bones.

You may find that there is a company or organization in your area that you can hire to come out and do the experiments for the group. Although youll have to spend more money by hiring someone else, you also get the benefit of having some experienced lead the group through the materials safely. The company may have different themed programs for you to choose from to best match your childs interests.

If you can, try to arrange to see a presentation by the person youre thinking about hiring so that you can be familiar with the experiments and have an idea of whether the program will interest your child and his or her friends. Some companies or individuals offer programs at schools and libraries and you may be able to attend one to check it out.

In the event that you dont find a company or individual near you offering this service or you just want to do it yourself, youll find plenty of resources on easy and fun experiments that you can do with kids. Check out books at your local library and look online for additional resources. Try to match the experiments to your childs interest and level of understanding whenever you can.

Youll want to have someone fun and charismatic do the presentation. If thats you, go through your presentation and the experiments several times so that you know the material. Youll also want to spend some time thinking about potential aspects that could go wrong and how youll handle it. Always keep everyones safety at the forefront of your planning.

Science presentations make a great addition to many birthday parties or other events where kids will be present. If you think your child may be interested, investigate whether this will work for your situation. You can find some fun, easy experiments to do with your child and his or her friends and the party will be different than everyone elses.

Tile and Grout Repair not Rocket Science

Homeowners today are constantly faced with maintenance and repair projects on their home. With an estimated 125,000,000 housing units in the USA, one can only imagine the number of hours, material and labor force required to maintain and protect the quality of these homes.

An ever increasing number of homeowners are discovering the advantages of learning simple and not-so-simple repairs around the house and the cost saving benefits of, doing it yourself.

Tile grout repair has been placed in the homeowners category of do not attempt for far too long and for those homeowners with willingness to learn and repair items around the house, its really not rocket science!

Although a complete tile or stone installation is best performed by a professional in the trade, homeowners can take on the ensuing maintenance and small repairs necessary for the longevity of their tile and grout.

Some of the most common grout problems homeowners face is around the sinks, tubs and showers. Where grout abuts differing materials like porcelain, sheetrock, metal or wood, this scenario introduces a set of factors that can affect the strength and foundation of the grout at those particular points. Expansion and contraction of the differing materials can cause cracking and chipping of the grout. The settling and movement of the house and foundation through the years can also cause cracking and splintering of grout joints as well as the tile itself.

A thorough investigation of the tiled surfaces in your home should include all the edges or ends of the tile and grout, all corners (where grout is likely to crack), tile and grout around windows, ledges and fixtures, and where tile grout meets various other building materials.

Repairing these cracks and chips can save you money in the long run, especially in the wet areas where water can seep through the damaged grout and rot the wood framing or underlayment. Home inspectors always look around the tub and shower for these water problems because its such a common problem, and when selling your house can be a very expensive repair.

If you can clean your grout, you can repair your grout! Its as simple as that. With the proper instructions, tools and products available today, homeowners no longer have to wait for a repairman or spend big bucks on a tile-man. They can now, Do-It-Themselves!

Birth Card The Basic Foundation Of The Destiny Card Science

To understand the science of the cards, the first thing we need to learn is about your Birth Card. It may have some resemblance to birth astrology but this one uses the cards of destiny as the basis. Essentially this is the card that was governing the day you were born. It is the first and foremost symbol of you and your life. There are other cards that also symbolize you but this one is first and primary. And it gives you a ton of information about you. Many people have discovered their life’s purpose simply by reading about themselves in my book, Love Cards. Others have made very lucrative and prosperous planning decisions using my other book, The Cards of Your Destiny. Let’s get you started learning what your card is.

You could, if you want, just go to my web site and do the Free Online Reading to find out what your Birth Card is along with a little about it. It can also give you future predictions based on your birthday. But today I am going to show you the formula that you can use to do this anywhere, any time.
By the way, this formula was a time-honored verbal tradition for centuries. It was never recorded until just recently, and was passed down from generation to generation as part of a ritual of attainment. I hope you enjoy using it and appreciating the gift it represents.
Here is the formula in a nutshell:
55 – ((Month # times 2) + Day #) = the solar value of your Birth Card.
Let’s do a quick example to illustrate this. We will take Angelina Jolie’s birthday which is June 4th. June is month number 6 so we take 6 and multiply it by 2 to get 12. Then we add her day of birth, 4 to it to get 16. Subtracting 16 from 55, we get the solar value of her Birth Card as 39.

Of course you are probably wondering how I find out that card that is, based upon that solar value. Here is a quick table to help you do just that.
Value Card Value Card
1 A of Hearts 27 A of Diamonds
2 2 of Hearts 28 2 of Diamonds
3 3 of Hearts 29 3 of Diamonds
4 4 of Hearts 30 4 of Diamonds
5 5 of Hearts 31 5 of Diamonds
6 6 of Hearts 32 6 of Diamonds
7 7 of Hearts 33 7 of Diamonds
8 8 of Hearts 34 8 of Diamonds
9 9 of Hearts 35 9 of Diamonds
10 10 of Hearts 36 10 of Diamonds
11 J of Hearts 37 J of Diamonds
12 Q of Hearts 38 Q of Diamonds
13 K of Hearts 39 K of Diamonds
14 A of Clubs 40 A of Spades
15 2 of Clubs 41 2 of Spades
16 3 of Clubs 42 3 of Spades
17 4 of Clubs 43 4 of Spades
18 5 of Clubs 44 5 of Spades
19 6 of Clubs 45 6 of Spades
20 7 of Clubs 46 7 of Spades
21 8 of Clubs 47 8 of Spades
22 9 of Clubs 48 9 of Spades
23 10 of Clubs 49 10 of Spades
24 J of Clubs 50 J of Spades
25 Q of Clubs 51 Q of Spades
26 K of Clubs 52 K of Spades

0 is the Joker I will speak more about the Joker in a later lesson.
From this chart you can see that Angelina Jolie is a King of Diamonds. Now take your birthday and calculate your Birth Card.
This table above is very easy to memorize. Essentially the solar value of any card is its position in the deck when the cards are arranged in their natural order. The natural order is from the Ace to the King, starting with the suit of Hearts, then Clubs, Diamonds and Spades. With a little practice you can do this entire calculation in your head and be able to know peoples Birth Card the moment you meet them. Later, as you learn the system more or when you start doing cards reading, you will find this very handy.

South Africa Pupils Amazes At International Science Fair

The majority of South African matric pupils are only concerned about passing their final exams and finding Jobs in Cape Town, but then there are other pupils who are engaged in science projects that would leave any seasoned scientist green with envy.

Cape Town boasts with Danielle Jacobson from Camps Bay High School, Ben Langer from Herzlia High School, and Philippe Lothaller from Rondebosch Boys High School. Danielle Mallabone from St Teresaa High School will be the only contestant from Johannesburg. And finally, Retselisitsoe Monyake from Harmony High School in Welkom, who all turned heads recently with their inventions at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair, in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Lothaller and Jacobson not only won bursaries to study at top universities in the USA, but also walked away with substantial cash prizes.

Danielle Jacobson, who is only 16 years old, won a $50,000 scholarship at West Virginia University for her work and study of how to employ bacteria and nano-electrodes to increase the electrical output of microbial fuel cells.
Danielles explanation of her research sounds like something from a doctoral thesis, which makes it even more impressive. Microbial fuel cells are devices that convert chemical energy into electrical energy by the catalytic reaction of specialised microbes.

Danielle discovered a method to make the electrodes 2,600 times more efficient, but unfortunately her process was too pricey to be viable for now.

Ben Langer discovered that by adding certain accelerants to rocket fuel, it was possible to increase the power to weight ratio of the rocket-engine. This won him the New American University Provost Scholarship, which allows him to study at Arizona State University. He also won a cash prize of $2,500 to do further research at the Office of Knowledge Enterprise Development.

Philippe Lothaller, who has always been spellbound by aircraft design, discovered a way to reduce wear on the aircraft tyres by attaching scoops to the wheels of the aircraft, which reduces friction-induced wear on the tyres. For his discovery, Philippe won a $7,500 cash prize from the United Airlines Foundation.

The abovementioned pupils were selected after performing well in the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair, which took place in 2012.

South Africas researchers and scientists are ageing and we are trying to encourage young students in these fields to become the next generation of scientists to solve the issues of energy and the environment we are facing, said Eskom Expo director, Priscilla Moodley.

Science Experiment How To Make Invisible Ink

Invisible ink has been used by spies and secret lovers alike for centuries to transmit hidden messages to their partners. Invisible ink isn’t just something you see in James Bond movies; hundreds of liquids, from fruit juices to household liquids, to specially formulated chemicals, can be used as invisible ink. In this science experiment, become a master of “steganography” by making your own invisible ink from baking soda and send secret messages to your friends:

WHAT YOU NEED:

“Purple grape juice
“Baking soda
“Tap water
“Cotton swab
“White writing paper

HOW TO PROCEED:

1.Thoroughly mix equal parts tap water and baking soda powder in a container until dissolved.
2.Use a cotton swab or fine paintbrush to write a message onto the white writing paper, using the baking soda and water solution as invisible ‘ink’. Make sure to dip the swab into the “ink” often so that the recipient can read the message with ease.
3.Allow the “ink” to dry out thoroughly until the writing becomes completely invisible. Your secret message is now ready to be delivered to the intended recipient.
4.One way for the recipient to read the message is to hold the paper up to a heat source, such as a light bulb, hot iron or it can even be placed in an oven. The baking soda will cause the writing in the paper to turn brown to enable the recipient to read the message!
5.A second method to read the message is to paint over the paper with purple grape juice. The message will appear in a different colour!

This science experiment works because substances such as vinegar or baking soda are either mildly acidic or alkaline, and such an acid or base weakens paper. The base from the baking soda remains in the paper after the water has evaporated and the paper has dried. When the paper is then held near a heat source such as a light bulb or hot iron, the alkaline parts of the paper burn or turn brown before the rest of the paper does, revealing the message written on the paper!

If you are using the grape juice method to reveal the message, the baking soda and grape juice react with each other in an acid-base reaction, producing a colour change in the paper to enable the recipient to read the secret message. Grape juice concentrate results in a more visible colour change than regular grape juice. There are many other household liquids that can be used to make invisible ink. Using the heat method, you can also use white wine, vinegar, apple juice, and even milk!

Go Green! Earth Science Fair Projects

Earth Science Fair Projects

Governments around the world along with private organization and companies are converging and discussing the environmental issues that are facing our planet. These international meetings are attended and lead by some of the greatest minds in the area of ecological sustainability. These leaders have spent their professional careers researching and implementing programs and policies to protect and repair the environment. They did not, however, wake up one day with all these qualifications in their heads. They have spent years and decades studying and researching their chosen field of specialty. Like other professionals, they began their careers as students. Many of these professionals are the very students who began their studies with earth science fair projects demonstrations. This was likely the first demonstration of their ability and desire to understand the systems and life forms with which we share the planet.

Earth science fair projects are the perfect venue for students who want to pursue a career in any number of environmental fields. The earth science fair projects of students often become the focus of their career goals. For those students interested in plant life, an earth science fair project on the growth of food crops might be in order. Students who are interested in the cycles of weather, and earth science fair project would be appropriate. Others who are interested in the history and origins of the very planet upon which we live could develop an earth science fair project around this huge topic. Regardless of the specific topic, earth science fair projects offer all students the opportunity to demonstrate their beginning knowledge of these important topics.

Many of the students who present earth science fair projects have plans on continuing their education at the college and postgraduate levels. These students often take the seed of interest that is planted with their first earth science fair projects and continue the studies at these higher educational levels. There are even professional who started at the high school science fair and were offered tuition and scholarships to continue their research. All the international professionals began as students, so the possibilities exist for all students interested in these fields of study. With these opportunities, students can transform their careers while transforming our stewardship of the Earth.

How Science Found The Missing Portion In The Weight-Loss Puzzle

Two out of three Americans are overweight. And diet after diet, the pounds always return. Why hasnt dieting worked until now?

Scientist feverishly worked on the ultimate solution and in 1994 they discovered a communication system between fat cells and also the brain. Fat cells create a messaging hormone called leptin that signals inside your brain that you are full and can quit eating.

One other leptin message regulates weight by telling your body’s cells to either get rid of fat or store it. Scientists assumed that over weight people needed more leptin. They were wrong!

To get more effective weight regulation, it isnt the amount of leptin, but clarity of the message that counts. If we consistently overeat, the fat gained sends out much more leptin which overwhelms the brain and body so they ignore the “stop eating start burning fat” message. This creates a vicious loop: fat cells keep creating progressively more leptin in an attempt to be heard, resulting in our bodies storing even more fat. That fat creates more leptin. This cycle is commonly called “leptin resistance” and it is a significant factor in the fat gain cycle.

The revolution started in 1994 at New Yorks Rockefeller University, when Dr. Jeffrey Friedman and his research team discovered that the fat cells of genetically obese mice failed to produce a chemical called LEPTIN. Leptin was the first adipokine, the first hormone shown to be made exclusively by fat cells. Researchers soon discovered that administration of leptin curbed the appetite and stimulated the metabolism of laboratory animals. Injecting leptin into genetically obese mice restored them to normal body weight. Leptin appeared to function as part of what scientists refer to as a negative feedback loop. When an animal is overfed and begins to gain weight, the increase in body fat leads to an increase in production of leptin, which in turn suppresses appetite and stimulates fat burning, restoring the animal to a normal lean weight. This method of internal self-correction is called “homeostasis” and it stabilizes the bodys internal state.

Overweight humans are not leptin deficient: the more body fat, the higher the levels of leptin in blood. For people who are chronically overweight, the problem seems to be that leptin is not doing its job of reducing appetite and stimulating fat burning. The effect of leptin is blocked. Scientists call this state LEPTIN RESISTANCE. Leptin resistance makes losing weight difficult if not impossible. The goal of The Fat Resistance Diet is to help readers overcome leptin resistance through a diet and exercise plan based on health research.

Advice about eating less and exercising more has been a resounding failure. Diets, whether theyre low calorie, low fat or low carbohydrate, all produce initial weight loss but do a lousy job of maintaining leanness. If theres a way that science can help us undo the damage technology has caused, then understanding and combating leptin resistance may well be the key.
